I have found that some people have a hard time finding the motivation to go to the gym, and its typically more psychological than physical. I can understand why it may be difficult to get up and make a change especially if you haven’t been feeling your best. That’s why I decided to make a post about it. Working on your mental clarity and state of mind is so valuable in that it makes the difference between reaching your goals on time, and falling behind. Below are some thoughts that maybe will open your mind to a new way of thinking.
The person who seems to have it together isn’t always the one who does. Sometimes you may just have to fake confidence until you’ve acquired the courage to really be and accept yourself. As surprising as It may sound there are a lot of people who do this – having worked in the fitness industry as a personal trainer for 8 years I’ve seen people who do very well for themselves financially yet are deeply insecure. I’ve seen the opposite as well – people who are not financially well off and are secure in themselves.
Confidence and mindset is a fascinating subject in that things aren’t always what they seem so you might as well do the best you can to show up as your best confident self as you continue to build yourself up:
1. It’s not about caring about what everyone thinks about you, it’s about not caring when somebody doesn’t. It’s about accepting and loving yourself for who you are authentically. – I remember working with some people who cared too much about people looking at them when they went to work out and I could tell how uneasy it was for them to focus. I would often tell them that its OK to care about what someone thinks of you, but whats not OK is giving up your power to let someone watching you influence how you think of yourself
2. I know my worth and know walk in my true value – walk like you are valuable. If you think you have no value that will manifest itself to be true. – if you think you can’t run, or lift weights then you will look just like that in the gym. Instead choose to purposefully walk with confidence even if you don’t know how to use the equipment, you will figure it out.
3. Not every man is built to see your value – not everyone will see the vision you have for yourself. I remember when I first got started and some peers thought it was bizzare to see a light weight female attempting heavy loads in a corporate gym, but I just didn’t care! It definitely wasn’t a hardcore gym so that made it a little more awkward, but I had 1 goal when I was there and I didn’t let people get in the way. Surprisingly my energy and confidence manifested into my strength that some of the guys started asking me how I did it!
4. Being confident is not about being right it’s about not being afraid to get it wrong – should I write more? Being confident that even if you are wrong in say a exercise and you may look a little silly, the effort is what will show your true character not the fact you’re doing something wrong.
5. They can’t kill you if you’re already dead – there is a movie where the coach of a basketball player said to his player that people can’t kill you if you’re already dead. In other words they can’t get to you if you’ve already been gotten to – get it? If you mentally prepare yourself for say a competition, they can’t get in your head if you’ve already tuned out the noise ahead of time! How do you accomplish this mindset? Simple, do not apply meaning to peoples’ reactions, or words unto you because the moment you apply meaning is the moment you lost. The secret is to remain neutral, and calm.
6. The biggest challenges bring the biggest rewards – without the challenges you won’t get the reward. Start today, and start now.
