Superfoods for Brain and Overall Health

Walnuts, Flaxseeds, Fish Oil
4

Flaxseeds, Fish Oil, and Walnuts are power foods for your health. I particularly find that flaxseeds are the secret to many peoples’ health, and is often not used by many. Walnuts are particularly great for protecting the brain from oxidative stress and inflammation, and prevent cognitive decline. The downside of walnuts is they are a very fatty nut, and one can overdo it pretty rapidly so it is wise to consider weighing out the nuts and track how much you are eating. It is suggested that adding walnuts to a diet may slow the process of brain aging as well as reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease.

Flaxseeds are high in omega 3 so if for some reason you can not get salmon fish or refuse to use fish oil you can opt in for some flaxseeds instead to get your daily omega 3 in. Flaxseeds are also rich in lignans. Lignans are plant compounds which have been associated with their strong affinty to fighting cancer properties. The lignans work by stimulating a increased production of enzymes which’ll deactivate carcinogens and decreasing the growth of cancer cells (lignans are also used to make medicines for cancer treatment). Lignans, are the type of phytoestrogens in flaxseeds, and can alter your estrogen metabolism which may be beneficial for postmenopausal women. Lignans can cause the body to produce less active forms of estrogen, and is believed to potentially reduce breast cancer risk. This is the flaxseeds I get and you can get too!

Fish oil is also another super food for your brain and health! The fish oil I use I prefer over using a pill for numerous reasons, but the main reason being that it technically is cheaper than buying fish and more affordable compared to different fish oil supplements. This fish oil is also from sardines, mackerel, and anchovies which are all smaller fish - a good thing. Sardines contain higher amounts of calcium, phosphorus, and iron than salmon, too.

I don’t know about you, but I am not a huge fan of sardines…so I just drink the oil!

Sardines are very wealthy in a variety of nutrients…not only are they a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, but they're also packed with protein! Additionally, sardines are a good source of vitamin B12, calcium , and other minerals.

Sustainability is one of the advantages of sardines considering their abundance and lower on the food chain. Thus fishing for them may have a less impact on the ecosystem compared to fish for salmon.
